The idea of traveling with a baby can feel totally overwhelming. Between nap schedules, diaper changes, and figuring out how to pack your entire house into a suitcase—it’s a lot. But your first trip as a parent doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and the right mindset, it can actually be one of your most memorable adventures.
Here’s everything I wish I’d known before our first trip with baby—plus tips that’ll make your journey smoother, calmer, and a whole lot more enjoyable.
1. Plan Ahead, Pack Smart
Start by choosing a baby-friendly destination. Look for accommodations that offer cribs, kitchenettes, and easy access to quiet spaces. Then, research where the nearest pharmacy or pediatric clinic is—just in case.
Packing? Make a list (and check it three times). Essentials include:
– Diapers & wipes (pack more than you think!)
– A couple of outfits per day
-Bottles, formula or snacks, and baby utensils
-Medications, thermometer, and first aid items
-Portable white noise machine or sound app
-Loveys or sleep items from home for comfort
Don’t forget a “survival carry-on” for the plane or car ride. Think: backup clothes (for both of you), snacks, toys, and sanitizing wipes.

2. Choose Gear That Works for You
When it comes to baby gear, lightweight and compact is your friend. These are game-changers for travel:
-Travel stroller or compact umbrella stroller
-Baby carrier for hands-free airport or sightseeing moments
-Travel crib or play yard if your hotel doesn’t offer one
-Portable changing mat (public bathrooms = yikes)
-Clip-on stroller fan or sunshade if you’re heading somewhere warm
3. Flying or Driving? Here’s What to Know
Flying? Feed during takeoff and landing to help with ear pressure. Bring new toys or teethers for distraction. And if your baby cries—it’s okay. Most fellow travelers are more understanding than you expect.
Driving? Plan your route around nap times. Make pit stops to stretch, feed, and let baby get some wiggles out. Car toys clipped to the seat are great for keeping little hands busy.
4. Stay Flexible With Routines
Stick to your routine loosely. Babies thrive on familiarity, so try to maintain your feeding and sleep schedules as best as you can—but be okay when things don’t go perfectly. Expect a little extra fussiness or wake-ups the first couple of days.
Aim for slow mornings, one “big” outing per day, and early evenings. Your trip doesn’t need to be packed to be perfect.
5. Don’t Let Perfection Be the Goal
No trip is without its hiccups, especially with a baby. Blowouts will happen. Someone will forget something. And yes, you may need to cancel a dinner reservation to stay in and rock a sleepy baby instead.
But you’ll also have magical moments: baby giggles on the beach, sleepy snuggles on a plane, the pride of doing something new as a parent.
